It’s been one of those days.
Wide awake 90 minutes before my alarm is set to ring, so I get up and shower and try not to get sick. New antibiotics and stress, gotta love them.
An hour early to the office, trying to knock things off the list. Things go pretty well until I get the blue screen of death and all my open projects crash. Was able to triage the problem and install the needed update, but needed some time to clear my head and get some lunch.
Grab my phone and car keys and head to the grocery store. Find the perfect sushi roll and grab a drink, along with a few other things. Almost at my 15 minute standing max, so I head to self checkout and reach for the credit card I always store in my phone pocket. That’s when I realize that I used it earlier and hurriedly threw it in my purse rather than putting it back.
Undeterred, I decide to use my Apple Pay. I’ve not used it before, so I ask the cashier for assistance. She informs me they don’t take Apple Pay, only Samsung something or other. They offer to hold it aside for me, but my feet are already screaming for standing too long, so I cancel the order and walk out empty-handed.
In the same parking lot there is a McDonald’s, and I know they take Apple Pay. Use the drive thru and place my order. Get to the pay window and ask to use Apple Pay. Everything looks good until it requires my Face ID for confirmation. I hadn’t set it up to recognize me with my new glasses on, and I’m holding up the long line. I again cancel my order and drive off empty-handed.
Pull in to a parking space and just put my head on the steering wheel. The thought of going back to the office, retrieving the card, and going back out is just a no-go. The thought of going back and eating oatmeal or soup from my emergency stash, or raiding the snack baskets is also unappealing.
“C’mon, self. Pretend this is one of those reality TV shows where you are dropped off in the middle of nowhere and have to survive by your wits and a smart phone. Can you really not figure out a solution?“
I stare at my phone and then around the parking lot, where I see a Chili’s. I log in to their online ordering system, use my stored credit card (after figuring out how to temporarily turn off the Face ID feature) and successfully place AND pay for my order. I drive over to the To-Go parking space and after 10 minutes am given my order.
I’m now exhausted, but I am fed. I call that a victory.
Joey, What a day you had! ‘Happy you finally found lunch @ Chili’s!
